The One Direction Scandal: Another Story Of A Celeb’s Rebel-Maturity Against The ‘Pop’ Image

If them getting tattoos wasn’t enough, this video leak of two #1D band members discussing about all things drugs did.

Surely, my One Directioners, I can agree that this has made you distraught after seeing the footage of Louis and Zayn (the cute one) #…ever blazing, ever blazing…# on that joint. Or was it a roll up cigarette (according to media reports)? They’re supposed to be your boy band charm, whom sing sweet puppy love songs. The kind of guys you’d take to your parents. That’s the One Direction you fell in love with correct ladies?

Apologies to slap your face, but what you fantasize about these boys isn’t the reality.

The shock has caused many to take out their sorrows on the tickets. Selling, tearing, burning etc… While the #Onedirectioners begin to boycott, multiple media sources continue their profit with reports of tour cancellations and the band’s fall-from-stardom-grace.

It’s really surprising as to how this has caused distraught and backlash when the likes of Miley Cyrus gets away with it! Remember her stunt at the Europe Music Awards? Many would feel that it’s another ‘I’m grown up now so *beep* the Disney image’ moment.  Regardless of  her freaky-wannabe-ghetto antics, she’s getting her ‘ …dollar dollar bill y’all’.

Oh well,  it shouldn’t be surprising when pop stars begin to do stupid mature actions in order to scream out loud ‘hey I’m grown so please *beep* the pop image’. For one, it’s stupid that Louis recorded this and left it out in the air. Honestly dude, what were you thinking?  Secondly, smoking joint doesn’t make you an adult, it makes you a pop rebel and it goes to show how much pressure you’re feel to keep up with the image fantasy. It’s become a statement that only begs for a buzz from the masses. Other ‘weed blazers’ include Rihanna and Lady Gaga. They’re still seeing their profit margin rise. Nothing’s changed.

On one perspective, we should be saying ‘So what if they smoke weed? Doesn’t effect our lives. It’s nobody’s business‘. I guess it’s due to the association of the drug with criminals and the negative stereotypes of Black people. We all know the saying it drugs, sex, rock and roll right people? The masses of these idols doing wrong is so immune that’s it’s almost like they’re treated like gods. Therefore when something like Prince Harry being butt naked on the front cover of the Sun, we’re sucked up in a weird way to see it. Whilst our high perceptions suddenly become  the public toilets. Boy are we the public sad at times.

At least (Harry) Styles has called them out about their recklessness. I believe he gets it as a pop singer, they are a brand; an image that must be protected at all costs. Anything such as drug allegations, criminal activity and asbo behaviour must not destroy their ‘boyband’ image. Otherwise, it’ll have a ripple effect on their success and brand equity and the last thing #1Directioners need is a breakup of the biggest boy pop group in the entire WORLD (since the Beatles)!

Does it mark beginning of rebel-maturity for more fame or an bad-omen-of-decline? At the moment, the scandal has been taken up by their lawyer. Nevertheless, here’s my message for the rich and famous: please think before you film/instagram something that would destroy your career.
